Backup Servers

Backup server data drives typically contain large files created by backup applications or disk imaging tools. If free space becomes highly fragmented, it can take longer for backups to complete. If the backup or image files are heavily fragmented, restore times take longer. You may want to consider optimizing when the backup or imaging application is not backing up data to the drive. This can be done if Auto-Optimization - Automatic Mode is enabled. You can configure Auto-Optimization to NOT run if a specific application (or process) is currently running.

On an ongoing basis, the data drive should be optimized using Consolidate Free Space when backup or image files become heavily fragmented (500+ fragments) or free space becomes highly fragmented. Perform an initial SMARTPlacement on the OS drive to optimize files and consolidate free space. Afterward, the OS drive should be optimized using SMARTPlacement at least monthly. For best optimization speed and performance on Backup server data drives, do not use enable Aggressive Free Space consolidation.
